Word of the Week: CIAO

Probably everyone knows the word CIAO! People all over the world use it as a greeting, regardless of their knowledge of the Italian language. It is an easy and informal, immediate way to greet people. But very few know the origin of the word and its deeper meaning. It comes from the Venetian dialect sciavo which means slave, so they were basically saying: I’m your slave. It was a way to express deference and offer their services.
