Word of the Week: GELATO

Everybody, literally every single person, knows what gelato is! Anyone who went to Italy had the experience to try gelato at some point (and if you haven’t, you better go back right away!!). There are a few little known fact about gelato that you may find useful. First of all, we do not have different words for the artisanal and mass produced variety: they are both called gelato, with the addition of the word ‘artigianale’ in some cases. Additionally, gelato is somehow divided in two categories: frutta (any fruit flavour) and cream (flavours such as chocolate, coffee, stracciatella can be find here.). Unwritten rule is that you are never to mix frutta and crema (unless you order vanilla), so you should never ask for chocolate and strawberry for example. Recently, this had become more common but, to me, if you get frutta and crema together this is still a sign that you are not Italian! Lastly, forget about your beloved North American flavours (think about Cookie dough, Cookies and Cream, Birthday cake): Italian gelaterie still rely heavily on more traditional ones, although many of them have one or two more experimental choices.
