Pasqua (Easter) is another perfect occasion for Italians to take advantage of the great food we cook (or buy) seasonally!
Although I have seen them around all year with different wrappings, chocolate eggs are only available for Easter in Italy. Big or small, with many types of chocolate or topping, with or without surprise inside, they are a staple for Easter kids (or adults!) due to their symbolic meaning of rebirth (both in a religious and secular way); eggs in general are common and appear on the tables in dishes such as Torta Pasqualina (quiche with spinach and eggs) or eggs and asparagus. Bunny shaped chocolate is becoming more and more popular due to a famous chocolate brand.
Another staple for Easter is Colomba, a sort of sweet bread covered in sugar coating and almonds, baked in the shape of a dove (that’s what Colomba means!!). You can only find it around Easter!
Don’t be fooled by the Panettone you can see in the store around Easter: that’s only for Christmas!!!
Be on the lookout for my post about Easter traditions and tell me yours!!!
