Easter traditions

As the saying points out: ‘A Natale con i tuoi, a Pasqua con chi vuoi’ > With yours [=family] for Christmas, with whomever you want for Easter! But in reality with spend a lot of our time with family, enjoying good food (lamb or other traditionally festive food) and chocolate galore! If you want to know more about what to eat for Easter, read my post about traditional food!

There are many different traditions in Italy for Easter and I’ve always been intrigued to learn about the traditions in other areas! For example, one of the traditions I’ve always enjoyed growing up is decorating hard-boiled eggs and then, on Easter Monday, get them to roll down a hill with my family. The egg that goes the farthest wins! But not even 30km away, in an area that is flat, they put a hard-boiled egg in front of a wall and throw a coin at it. Whoever manages to get the coin to stick in the egg, wins! Easter egg hunts are not traditional but they are becoming more popular.

On Easter Monday, we normally spend time with friends for a ‘grigliata’ [BBQ] and a pic-nic style meal!

What are some of your traditional activities for Easter from your family or your area in Italy?
