Sometimes, inspiration finds us in the most unexpected ways. In this case, this post is inspired by one of my students, who recently asked me why fruit salad is called ‘macedonia’ in Italian. After admitting that I had no clue and that I had never questioned its origins, despite being quite the curious term, I promised I’d look it up, so here I am! If your knowledge of European geography is good enough, you probably already realized that fruit salad shares the name with the country in the Balkans, but this is not an explanation. Turns out, fruit salads, with their pieces of different types of fruit all mixed together, are reminiscent of the cultural and ethnic diversity found in the region of Macedonia, a melting pot since the age of Alexander the Great.
Thanks to my students for keeping my curiosity levels up!!
