Carnevale

As the saying goes, ‘A Carnevale, ogni scherzo vale’ (All pranks are allowed during Carnevale). This period, that stretches from January 6 until Mardi gras, is filled with joy and food (see what you can eat in this blog!). Celebrations happen all over Italy but some cities take it to a whole another level and amaze locals and tourists with their events.

In Venice, elaborate and historical masks perfectly match the dream-like background of the city.

The city of Ivrea is famous for its Battle of the Oranges, where groups throw fruit at each other to re-enact the historical city’s defiance against the local tyrant in the 12th century.

In Viareggio, prepare to be left agape by the elaborate floats that parade the streets of the city.

Refer to the websites of the Carnevale of each city to get a detailed program and more information, especially if you are planning to visit Italy during Carnevale!
