I love a good pun so I thought this would be the nicest way to start a post on the word “bocca” (=mouth)! Since Italians love to talk and eat, as you can imagine our mouth are often open!! We have some nice saying you can learn with this word.
- Di buona bocca = someone who eats everything and, by extension, someone who is happy with anything;
- Acqua in bocca! = Be quiet! Literally, water in your mouth, it asks the person not to reveal a secret or not to talk about something;
- A bocca aperta = With your mouth open, usually in disbelief;
- A bocca asciutta = With your mouth dry, as in without something you wanted or expected;
- Con l’amaro in bcca = With bitterness in your mouth, refers to a situation of disappointment;
- In bocca al lupo! = a good luck wish, the equivalent of the English ‘Break a leg’. People usually reply “Crepi” or “Crepi il lupo” [May the wolf die]
